Nairobi, a city known for its vibrant culture and sprawling neighborhoods, is at the center of an artistic revolution that envisions a more just and sustainable future.
Through Kairos Futura’s latest exhibition, Hakuna Utopia? In Search of Micro-Utopias, residents and visitors alike are invited to explore the hidden gems of Nairobi while engaging with grassroots projects that reflect the city’s potential for positive change. The exhibition, which runs through December 15, 2024, offers a fresh lens on Nairobi’s evolving identity, blending art, activism, and futures thinking.
From environmental initiatives to community-led art installations, Hakuna Utopia? offers a striking contrast to the common perception of utopia as an unreachable dream. Instead, this project seeks to highlight “micro-utopias”—smaller, tangible efforts already underway that inspire hope and resilience in the face of the city’s complex challenges.
The ‘Hakuna Utopia?’ exhibition and ‘Utopia Interventions’ workshops offer complementary ways to engage with the idea of utopia,” said Kairos Futura co-director, Abdul Rop. “The passports and map encourage exploration and highlight existing initiatives, while the workshops empower individuals to become active agents of change and create their own visions for a better future.”
A passport to discovery
Visitors to Hakuna Utopia? are invited to engage with Nairobi in an interactive and immersive way. Upon arrival at Kairos Atelier, the project’s creative hub, participants receive a Utopia Passport—a personalized guide to the various projects and locations scattered across the city.
Each passport functions not just as a map, but as an invitation to explore parts of Nairobi that often go overlooked. From community gardens revitalizing neglected spaces to environmental workshops fostering sustainable practices, the passport takes visitors on a journey to discover the city’s micro-utopias.
As participants visit each site, they can collect stamps in their passports—tangible proof of their exploration and engagement. The projects they encounter along the way offer a glimpse into the future of Nairobi, where innovative ideas and grassroots efforts are already transforming lives.
At the heart of this initiative is the Utopia Map, a large visual representation displayed at Kairos Atelier. The map pinpoints the locations of the micro-utopias and provides essential information about each one, creating a broader narrative of Nairobi’s social and ecological challenges.
It also showcases the community-led solutions that are emerging in response to those challenges. For many visitors, the map serves as both an educational tool and an inspiration, encouraging them to see Nairobi as a city where real change is possible.
Creating your own utopia
Beyond exploration, Kairos Futura is offering a more hands-on experience with its series of Utopia Interventions workshops. These sessions, designed to blend futures thinking and design, encourage participants to envision their own utopias by addressing some of Nairobi’s most pressing social and ecological challenges.
Drawing on design thinking and worldbuilding principles, participants are tasked with imagining—and creating—concrete interventions that could shape a better future for their city.
“The Utopia Interventions workshops give participants the tools to not just dream about change, but to actually take part in it,” says Rop. “We believe in empowering individuals to become agents of transformation in their own communities.”
From reimagining Nairobi’s transportation system to tackling food security, the workshops push attendees to think big while remaining grounded in real-world challenges. Participants leave the sessions not just with ideas, but with actionable plans—small steps toward realizing their personal utopias.
A city of possibilities
At its core, Hakuna Utopia? seeks to challenge the idea that utopia is a distant, unattainable ideal. Instead, it reframes utopia as something that can be built here and now through collective effort and creative thinking. By shining a light on Nairobi’s micro-utopias, Kairos Futura hopes to inspire others to see the city’s potential and to take part in its transformation.
The project is made possible with support from Crtve Development’s We!Are Unmuted campaign, an initiative that celebrates African resilience and ingenuity in the face of climate change and social injustice. We!Are Unmuted aims to amplify African voices and solutions, particularly in climate-vulnerable areas, by showcasing grassroots efforts that are already making a difference.
Through this collaboration, Hakuna Utopia? highlights not just the future of Nairobi, but the future of Africa—a future defined by innovation, community, and sustainability.
As Nairobians and visitors explore the city’s micro-utopias, they are reminded that building a better world doesn’t require grand gestures or distant dreams. Sometimes, it starts with something as simple as a garden, an art installation, or a workshop. It starts with reimagining what’s possible—one neighborhood, one project, one step at a time.
