A team of researchers from the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), led by Professor Young Min Song, has developed a revolutionary vision system inspired by feline eyes to enhance object detection for autonomous systems.

This advanced technology improves visual accuracy in challenging lighting conditions, offering significant potential for drones, self-driving vehicles, and robotics in complex environments.

Autonomous systems are becoming increasingly integrated into daily life, yet many face difficulties in “seeing” clearly under varying light conditions or when objects blend into complex backgrounds. Inspired by nature’s solution to this problem, particularly the eyes of cats, the research team has designed a system to address these challenges.

Cats are known for their exceptional vision, both in bright light and darkness. Their vertical slit pupils help them focus in daylight, reducing glare, while a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum enhances their ability to see at night. This biological design served as the inspiration for the GIST team’s novel vision system.

“Our system includes a slit-like aperture that mimics the vertical pupils of cats, allowing the filtering of unnecessary light and enhancing focus on key objects,” explained Professor Song. “Additionally, it incorporates a reflective layer similar to the tapetum lucidum, improving sensitivity in low-light conditions.”

This innovative approach, which minimizes glare in bright environments and boosts visibility in dim settings, enhances the performance of single-lens cameras used in robotics. By filtering out unnecessary details, it reduces the energy required for complex image processing, making it both effective and energy-efficient.

The GIST team’s research was published in the journal Science Advances on 18 September 2024 and marks a significant leap forward in the development of artificial vision systems. The feline-inspired technology promises to dramatically enhance object detection and recognition capabilities, positioning it at the forefront of innovations in autonomous robotics.

“Robotic cameras often struggle to detect objects against busy or camouflaged backgrounds, especially when lighting conditions change,” Professor Song said. “Our design allows robots to blur out unnecessary details and focus on key objects, making it easier to navigate intricate environments with greater precision.”
