The African Development Bank (AfDB) has opened an ICT hub at the United States International University (USIU) Nairobi Campus.
This centre will be used to train and equip African youth with information and communication technology, entrepreneurship, and soft-skills training to compete in a digital economy, under the Coding for Employment program.
The program was started in 2018 and its online platforms offer free in-demand technical courses such as web development, design, data science, and digital marketing.
During the opening ceremony, AfDB’s Division Manager for Education and Skills Development, Hendrina Doroba said, “The future will be shaped by technology, and it is our responsibility to prepare our young people for the challenges that lie ahead.”
Similar ICT center was set up at the University of Nairobi in March 2022.
The two ICT hubs are open to youth aged 15 – 35 enrolled in the Coding for Employment program.
Also, it considers those who do not qualify or have the means to attend traditional university programs.
Partners involved in the project include Technical partners Junior Achievement Kenya, Microsoft and Rockefeller Foundation.
The program and its partners aim to reach over 1,800 Kenyan youth through the two technology hubs.
