Starting January 1, 2023, Bonga Points will now be expiring, Safaricom recently announced.
According to reports, the value of idle Bonga Points has since bulged from Sh3 billion in 2015 to Sh4.5 billion in 2022.
Bonga Points is a loyalty scheme by Safaricom that enable its prepay and postpay customers to earn points immediately, once registered to the program.
Customers earn one Bonga point for every Sh10 spent on voice calls, SMS, or data.
The loyalty program has been around for more than one decade and a half and now the telecommunication firm wants to compel people who don’t redeem the Bonga Points to do so before they expire.
Their expiry date will depend on the number of points a person has.
One cannot reinstate expired Bonga Points or be able to extend their validity.
All Bonga Points older than three years (from December 2019) will expire and will be unavailable for redemption.
Also, one will not be able to reverse a Lipa na Bonga transaction once the points have expired.
Before expiry, one can redeem them for data, SMS, or voice, including cases where customers can use them to pay their postpaid bills.
Also, many services allow Bonga Point redemption, including supermarkets and Safaricom shops where customers can shop for items stipulated for the offer in conjunction with the loyalty program.
To enroll, check or redeem your Bonga Points, simply dial *126# and follow the prompts.
