Uber’s First Decade in Kenya Generated Billions, and New Livelihoods

Ten years after hitting Nairobi’s streets, Uber’s economic footprint extends far beyond rides, from billions in driver earnings to new community businesses, reshaping what flexible work means in Kenya

Uber marked its 10th anniversary in Kenya with an event honoring the drivers and couriers who have helped make the platform a fixture of urban life — and, for many, a source of livelihood and dignity.

The company’s “Earner Appreciation Event,” held under the theme of empowerment and community, brought together top-rated drivers for the Uber Kenya Empowerment Awards. The ceremony celebrated individuals recognized as longest-serving earners, community champions, and those with the highest customer ratings — stories of resilience and innovation that have defined Uber’s decade-long journey in the country.

“Our commitment to Kenya is about more than just mobility and delivery; it’s about building a partnership for shared prosperity,” said Imran Manji, General Manager for Uber East Africa. “Today, we are proud to honour the hard work of our earners. Their success is a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit that fuels Kenya’s economic growth.”

As part of the celebration, Uber announced several new initiatives designed to improve the day-to-day lives of its drivers. A new partnership with TotalEnergies will give drivers discounted fuel — one of their biggest daily expenses — while an ongoing collaboration with Safaricom ensures both drivers and riders can use the Uber app without consuming their personal data, through the “No Bundles, No Problem” campaign.

In a move to enhance driver wellbeing, Uber also unveiled a partnership with Vision Spring, offering free eye tests and eyeglasses to drivers and couriers. “By investing in eye health, Uber is reinforcing its commitment to safety, ensuring drivers can see clearly on the road and provide safer trips for all,” the company said.

Top-rated drivers were further recognized with special earning incentives, a gesture meant to strengthen relationships with Uber’s most trusted earners.

According to Uber’s 2023 Impact Report, drivers who use the platform earned 37 percent more than their next best alternative, collectively taking home an additional KSh 2.2 billion in income each year. The platform generated KSh 14.1 billion in overall economic value — figures that underscore Uber’s influence on Kenya’s digital and informal economies.

To simplify tax compliance, Uber has also partnered with the Kenya Revenue Authority to issue electronic tax invoices (e-TIMS) on behalf of drivers. The automated system replaces what was once a tedious manual process, ensuring easier recordkeeping and compliance with new government regulations.

Since launching in Nairobi in 2015, Uber has completed millions of trips, empowered thousands of earners, and contributed billions to Kenya’s economy. A decade later, its focus remains on innovation, empowerment, and expanding access to opportunity.
