In a move set to accelerate Gabon’s digital transformation, U.S. technology firm Cybastion has signed a landmark agreement with the Central African nation to enhance digital infrastructure and expand access to cybersecurity and technological solutions. The agreement, formalized in Libreville on January 28, is poised to strengthen Gabon’s position as a competitive digital hub on the African continent.

The deal follows a memorandum of understanding signed in October at the U.S.-Gabon investment roundtable, an event facilitated by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s U.S.-Africa Business Center. As part of the initiative, Cybastion will oversee the construction of a state-of-the-art data center, improve national cybersecurity measures, and introduce a digital identification system designed to streamline access to essential services.

The agreement was signed by Dr. Thierry Wandji, CEO of Cybastion, and Brigadier General Bonjean Rodrigue Mbanza, Gabon’s Minister of the Digital Economy and New Information Technologies.

“This agreement, which marks a decisive step in strengthening bilateral cooperation between the United States and Gabon, aligns perfectly with the strategic vision of His Excellency, Brigadier General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, President of the Transition, President of the Republic, and Head of State,” said General Mbanza at the signing ceremony.

A significant component of the initiative is the DigiEmpower Workforce Training Program, an ambitious effort to upskill over 1,000 Gabonese citizens—particularly youth and women—for careers in the digital economy. Launched in partnership with Cisco, the program aims to foster a highly skilled workforce prepared for employment in both public and private sectors.

“Gabon is experiencing rapid growth in its digital economy, and Cybastion is honored to partner with the Government of Gabon to help achieve its digital transformation ambitions,” said Dr. Wandji. “This agreement is a significant step forward in expanding and modernizing Gabon’s technological access and infrastructure while unlocking tremendous economic growth.”

The initiative has garnered strong support from U.S. officials. Ambassador Vernelle Trim FitzPatrick, the U.S. Ambassador to Gabon, emphasized the broader impact of the agreement, noting, “Today’s signing ceremony exemplifies a partnership that is not merely transactional – it is transformational. An innovative, secure Gabon contributes to regional stability, a region vital to global trade and maritime security.”

The project is backed by key industry players, including PORTEO S.A., a leader in infrastructure construction, and Credence ID, a U.S. company specializing in digital identification. Hassan Dakhlallah, Chairman of PORTEO S.A., highlighted the importance of the partnership, stating, “The ambitious vision of this tripartite partnership for Gabon’s economy is the driving force behind our commitment. Being the partner of choice for Cybastion on this large-scale project is a testament to our expertise and know-how in building critical infrastructure in Africa.”

Bruce Hanson, CEO of Credence ID, underscored the impact of secure digital identity solutions, saying, “Through our advanced digital ID technology, we will deliver secure, reliable, and inclusive identity verification for Gabon’s citizens, enabling seamless access to essential public services and financial institutions.”

Cybastion’s investment aligns with its mission to empower Africa’s digital future by fostering secure and resilient digital ecosystems. As Gabon positions itself for the next phase of technological advancement, the partnership is expected to drive innovation, create employment opportunities, and solidify the country’s digital economy.
