Software engineering students in Kenya and Nigeria are set to benefit from Microsoft internships.

Under the programme software engineering interns will work with teammates to ‘solve problems and build innovative software solutions’. Teammates include university students drawn from across the world.

To attain the scholarships, applicants need a bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering, computer science or related field. Also, they must have at least one additional quarter/semester of school remaining following the completion of the internship.

Other basic qualifications include programming experience in an object-oriented language (C, C#, C++, Java, Python) and ability to demonstrate an understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures and algorithms.

The roles will begin in September and 50 per cent of the job will be done from home.

“Software engineers (SWEs) work with teammates to solve problems and build innovative software solutions. You are passionate about customers and product quality, and you provide technical guidance to Program Managers as they consider user needs and product requirements. You will also be expected to demonstrate an ability to learn and adopt relevant new technologies, tools, methods and processes to leverage in your solutions,” the firm noted.

Explaining what the opportunity represents, Microsoft noted that the interns would get the chance to work on real-world projects. They noted that it could help them get closer to their goals.
