Zambia’s Fibrecom is earning widespread recognition for its ambitious expansion of a 15,000-kilometer optic fiber network, powered by artificial intelligence (AI). The company’s efforts are not only enhancing domestic connectivity but also establishing critical cross-border links with neighboring countries such as Angola, Botswana, and beyond, contributing to regional digital transformation.

Speaking at a networking event in Lusaka, Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati applauded Fibrecom for its resilience and commitment to providing reliable high-speed broadband services.

He emphasized the critical role the company’s robust optic fiber infrastructure plays in facilitating seamless digital communication across various sectors, including education.

Fibrecom’s Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Nga’nalelwa Sitwala, highlighted the company’s ongoing dedication to digital transformation. He emphasized the integration of AI-driven technologies as a pivotal step in enhancing Fibrecom’s infrastructure across borders, aimed at bridging the digital divide and fostering a more connected Zambia and Africa.

Simon Muwowo, Fibrecom’s Director of Enterprise and Engineering, detailed the company’s extensive network, which spans all 10 provinces in Zambia and boasts a transmission capacity of 4 terabits per second (Tbps).

He further noted Fibrecom’s successful expansion into neighboring countries such as Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, and Tanzania, with plans underway to extend connectivity to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique.

“Our infrastructure is designed not only to connect Zambia but to serve as a gateway to global networks,” Muwowo said, underscoring Fibrecom’s role in driving regional connectivity and supporting Africa’s digital future.
