Burundi and Zambia to connect via underwater fiber optic cable after signing MoU

Léocadie Ndacayisaba, Burundi’s Minister of Communication, Technology, and Information, called the MoU a significant step in the technological partnership between the two countries. “This initiative will reshape the digital landscape in both nations, improving internet access, communication, and overall quality of life for our citizens,” she said.

Earlier this year, Burundi celebrated the completion of the first phase of its national fiber optic network project, built by the Burundi Backbone System (BBS) Company, with support from the World Bank’s Regional Communication Infrastructure Programme, the Burundian government, and private partners.

Internet penetration in Burundi is projected to reach 18.33% by the end of 2024, with 2.51 million households gaining access, while Zambia’s internet penetration is expected to hit 43.44%, covering 2.48 million households.

Zambia has been making significant strides in improving its digital infrastructure. In February 2024, the government announced plans to construct 60 4G mobile towers to boost connectivity in rural areas, alongside plans to establish digital centers offering free internet access.

Additionally, 520 communication towers are currently being built across the country, with a goal of achieving 96% phone and internet coverage by 2026.
