Reporting From The Future

Apple Chip Chief Johny Srouji Says He Has No Plans to Leave

Even as Apple navigates a series of high-profile executive exits, Johny Srouji, the company’s chip chief, reassures employees that he remains committed to leading Apple’s hardware innovations and advancing its next-generation technologies

Apple chip chief Johny Srouji addressed speculation about his future in an internal memo on Monday, saying he has no plans to leave the company soon.

“I love my team, and I love my job at Apple, and I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon,” he wrote.

Tim Cook had been told by Srouji that he was considering leaving, according to a report by Bloomberg, which cited people familiar with the matter.

Srouji is regarded as one of Apple’s most influential executives and leads the hardware technologies group, which oversees chip development. He joined the company in 2008 and has overseen the creation of the M-series chips used in Macs and the A-series chips used in iPhones.

His memo came as Apple has experienced a series of high-profile leadership changes, raising questions about stability at the top of the company.

Beyond developing the chips that enabled Apple to move away from Intel processors in its computers, Srouji’s teams have worked in recent years on a cellular modem designed to replace modems supplied by Qualcomm in most iPhones.

Srouji is a regular presenter at Apple product launches.

“I know you’ve been reading all kind of rumors and speculations about my future at Apple, and I feel that you need to hear from me directly,” Srouji wrote in the memo. “I am proud of the amazing Technologies we all build across Displays, Cameras, Sensors, Silicon, Batteries, and a very wide set of technologies, across all of Apple Products.”

The clarification follows a wave of recent senior departures. Last week, Apple said its head of artificial intelligence, John Giannandrea, was stepping down.

Two days later, the company disclosed that Alan Dye, its head of user interface design and the driving force behind the Liquid Glass redesign, was leaving to join Meta.

A day after Dye’s exit, Apple announced the retirement of its general counsel and vice president for environment, policy, and social initiatives. Both executives reported directly to Cook.

Earlier this fall, Apple’s chief operating officer, Jeff Williams, retired.
