Pan-African data center provider Africa Data Centres (ADC) has announced the successful launch of the expansion at its CPT1 facility in Cape Town, South Africa. This development marks a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to enhance digital infrastructure. This move has provided an additional 1,000 racks of white space for customer use.
The company has announced that this expansion will include three new state-of-the-art data halls in new areas of the campus, along with an additional 6MW of IT load capacity, effectively doubling its current capacity.
According to Hardy Pemhiwa, president and Group CEO of Cassava Technologies, the parent company of Africa Data Centres,“This expansion by Africa Data Centres is in response to the increasing demand for colocation capacity in South Africa. Cape Town is the second largest provincial economy in South Africa, as well as the de facto software and technology hub in Southern Africa,” he said.
The expansion includes robust connectivity options, with multiple fiber routes and connections to major internet exchange points. This ensures low latency and high-speed connectivity, essential for businesses relying on real-time data processing and cloud services. The facility’s scalable design allows for future growth, ensuring that Africa Data Centres can continue to meet the increasing demands of its customers.
In an interview with ITWeb, Dr. Angus Hay, ADC’s regional executive said that the project was being funded from a large capital pool of $500 million. “At the moment we have a capital plan in progress, you can see from the expansion we are doing, the construction in Cape Town and the building in Samrand. That is all being funded from a large capital pool of $500 million, and that is a combination of debt and equity within the larger Cassava Technologies group, “he said.
As Africa’s digital landscape continues to evolve, the demand for high-quality data center services will grow too. Africa Data Centres is well-positioned to meet this demand, providing the infrastructure needed to support businesses in their digital journeys.
ADC expansion in Cape Town is a significant development for the region’s digital infrastructure. With state-of-the-art technology, a focus on sustainability, and a commitment to supporting digital transformation, Africa Data Centres is playing a crucial role in shaping Africa’s digital future.
South Africa’s location at the southernmost point of the continent makes it a key hub for regional and international connectivity. It acts as a gateway to other African markets and connects Africa to Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
The growth of data centers in Africa highlights the continent’s increasing importance in the global digital arena. Despite the challenges, the future appears bright, fueled by rising digitalization, supportive trade agreements. As Africa continues to adopt digital advancements, data centers will play a crucial role in shaping its economic and social landscape.
