Acer Targets Major CO₂ Cuts in Supply Chain With Electric Trucks and Biofuels

The company’s experiments with green logistics may seem like a niche concern, but Acer’s bet is that the road to a more sustainable tech industry runs not just through devices and data centers, but through the trucks, ships and spare parts that keep them moving

Acer says it plans to slash carbon emissions across its supply chain by more than 2,000 tonnes by 2025, an ambitious target it hopes to achieve with electric trucks, certified biofuels and tighter monitoring of every shipment.

The company said in a press statement it will go from reducing 274 tonnes of CO₂ in 2023 to a target of 2,470 tonnes by the end of 2025. The effort will be supported by renewed partnerships with logistics providers Kuehne+Nagel and DSV, alongside investments in emissions-tracking tools and what it describes as “green reinvestment mechanisms” for a zero-impact supply chain.

From September, the first shipments by electric trucks will begin in the Netherlands. Acer is also working with Kuehne+Nagel on the use of Hydro Vegetable Oil and other biofuels. The company has introduced an internal system to monitor the emissions of each shipment, which it says will improve transparency and enable targeted interventions.

“The preference for sea transport,” said Riccardo Bernasconi, EMEA Senior Director of Supply Chain at Acer, “is motivated by a clear sustainability objective, favouring modes of transport with a lower environmental impact. This is complemented by reduced air and sea-air transport (e.g. via Dubai), as well as land transport by truck and a train that is currently suspended for geopolitical reasons. Events such as the Suez Canal crisis can increase costs by up to 25-30%, also affecting the environmental footprint, which is why transport choices are fundamental for both economic efficiency and sustainability.”

The company said previous measures — including consolidating shipments — have already reduced 779 truck journeys and cut 593 tonnes of CO₂ since 2022. The use of Sustainable Maritime Fuel, it added, allows for emissions reductions of up to 85%.

Acer’s efforts are also supported by a mechanism that reinvests company budgets and uses contractual penalties to fund further sustainability projects. “As logistics advisors, we help our customers transform their business model by strategically design their value chain to make them profitable, sustainable and future proof,” said Ave Stella Maris Crotti, Sustainability Manager at Kuehne+Nagel. “Collaboration and transparency are key to turn our ESG commitment into action.”

Beyond transport, Acer said it is preparing for the European Union’s upcoming “Right to Repair” directive, which will increase the availability of spare parts. Its internal motherboard repair system already allows faulty components to be refurbished and returned to circulation, reducing waste.

‘Sustainability is part of our corporate culture,’ said Trivikram Jayacham, Acer EMEA’s HR Senior Director. “For this reason, we have embarked on a ‘proactive path’ by adopting innovative business models that prioritise reducing our environmental impact. Among the projects, which are small but greatly appreciated by our employees, are the charging station for electric cars and the free provision of eBikes/eScooters to promote sustainable mobility during working hours.”
