Kenyan Android users are increasingly at risk as cyberattacks targeting mobile applications surged by over 333% in Q3 2024, according to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA). The report highlights a troubling rise in digital threats amidst growing smartphone penetration across the country.

From July to September 2024, the CA recorded 117,661 mobile app attacks, a staggering increase from 27,147 during the same period in 2023. This marks an 18.5% rise compared to the previous quarter. Despite issuing 6,599 early warnings during the period, a slight drop from 7,193 in Q3 2023, the sophistication of attacks has grown significantly.

The CA’s Computer Incident Response Team—Coordination Centre (CIRT/CC) noted that attackers primarily targeted sensitive user data, including personal identification, login credentials, and financial details.

Beyond smartphones, devices such as Android-powered smart TVs, set-top boxes, and Google TVs were also heavily targeted, often through malware-laden third-party applications.

“Hackers exploit the lack of awareness among users by promoting third-party apps not available on official app stores,” the CA warned in its report.

The surge in cyberattacks exposes millions of Kenyans to risks of financial losses, identity theft, and unauthorized access to personal information.

This growing threat underscores the urgent need for increased cybersecurity awareness and the adoption of safe digital practices.

The report serves as a wake-up call for users and policymakers alike to prioritize security measures to safeguard Kenya’s rapidly digitizing society.
