Africa must take control of its artificial intelligence (AI) future by shaping its own AI frameworks and implementing ethical solutions tailored to the continent’s unique challenges and opportunities.

This call to action was made by Professor Mark Nasila, Head of Advanced Analytics, Chief Risk Officer, and Retail Banking at First National Bank, during the SingularityU South Africa Summit 2024 in Johannesburg.

Nasila emphasized the importance of Africa actively participating in the global AI landscape rather than adopting solutions developed elsewhere. Speaking on the topic “Africa’s AI Sovereignty: Unleashing the Potential for Home-Grown Innovation and Self-Reliance,” he highlighted the concern that the majority of AI advancements and economic benefits are concentrated in North America and China, which account for 70% of the projected global AI value of $16 trillion.

Nasila called on African governments and institutions to support and incentivize local AI startups and innovation hubs. He introduced the concept of “AI factories,” decentralized innovation centers that could drive the development of intelligent products and services customized for Africa’s specific needs.

This approach, Nasila argued, would position Africa to participate in the AI value chain beyond just consumption, enabling the continent to industrialize and reduce dependence on foreign technologies.

“Africa has the opportunity to shape the future of AI by focusing on ethical, responsible, and locally relevant frameworks,” Nasila said. “Our national priorities must contribute to global AI standards, ensuring Africa’s voice is heard in this transformative technology.”

He also urged African leaders to collaborate in redirecting the course of AI development to better align with the continent’s priorities, fostering innovation, and enhancing self-reliance.
