Global 5G network provider Nokia, has finalized a deal to bring 5G technology to Egypt with Telecom Egypt, the country’s market-leading telecom operator for the first time. This deployment is set to begin later this year.
The collaboration seeks to transform the country’s telecom landscape by bringing the revolutionary power of 5G to cities like Alexandria, Giza, Luxor, and Aswan. Nokia will supply its comprehensive AirScale portfolio to deliver an exceptional network experience for Telecom Egypt’s customers, featuring faster data speeds, improved performance, and increased capacity. Deployment is scheduled for later this year.
Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks for Nokia, noted that the agreement extends Nokia’s long-standing partnership with Telecom Egypt. “The introduction of 5G services enabled by our extensive portfolio will open exciting new opportunities for people and businesses in Egypt to experience enhanced mobile connectivity. Our collaboration establishes a strong foundation for driving the nation’s digital transformation,” he said.
This deployment follows Telecom Egypt being awarded the country’s first 5G license in January by Egypt’s National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority. The license, valued at $150 million, is valid for 15 years.
“This new agreement with Nokia further strengthens our strong partnership, reaffirms our commitment to providing cutting-edge digital services, and positions us at the forefront of the 5G revolution,” said Mohamed Al Fowey, Vice President, and Chief Technology Officer at Telecom Egypt. “Both our consumer and enterprise customers can look forward to enhanced mobile broadband and exciting new applications that leverage the speed and low latency of 5G technology.”
Nokia will provide 5G radio access network (RAN) equipment from its comprehensive AirScale portfolio. This includes advanced Massive MIMO radios, baseband units, remote radio heads, and a range of associated services.
The introduction of 5G technology is expected to offer numerous benefits to Egyptians, including enhanced capacity for seamless connectivity in Egypt’s most densely populated areas.
This upgrade is also expected to support a wide range of applications and services, leading to faster downloads, smoother streaming, and improved network performance. This advancement will foster unprecedented levels of innovation and efficiency across various sectors, empowering organizations to thrive in today’s fast-paced digital landscape.
