Phishing is one of the most common types of cybercrime, as it is easy to access and effective.
With pre-made phishing kits readily available, even those with little technical knowledge can launch phishing operations.
According to data from Atlas VPN, e-shop brands were the most commonly used bait by phishers in 2022, accounting for 42% of financial phishing cases.
While companies in the banking and payment industries were also targeted, they only comprised about 10% of all financial phishing incidents.
The data comes from Kaspersky security product users who voluntarily provided anonymized data.
The popularity of online shopping has led to more companies being imitated by phishers globally.
Apple is the most frequently impersonated brand, accounting for approximately 60% of e-shop financial phishing threats in 2022.
Amazon is the second most imitated brand with 15%, while Mercari, MercadoLibre, and eBay are used in only 6% of phishing attacks.
Payment systems are also targeted, with PayPal being the favorite target, accounting for 84.23% of phishing URLs for electronic payment systems.
Other payment systems such as American Express, Visa, and MasterCard have seen their shares decline significantly.
