Carbon removal technologies launched ahead of COP27

Online platforms committed to the removal of carbon dioxide have been launched ahead of the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (‘COP27’) to be held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, later this week (November 6-18).

These platforms referred to as Carbon Removals at COP will stream events and publish daily commentary during the international climate conference.

These Carbon Removals comprise Carbon Gap, Open Air Collective, Rethinking Removals, Direct Air Capture Coalition, Carbon Business Council and other partners.

This vibrant and fast-growing community comprises climate activists, policy-makers, tech companies, carbon market developers and leaders in hard-to-abate industries as a massive, multifaceted approach is needed to ensure carbon removal is done effectively, fairly and responsibly.

“They will provide regular updates on the latest thinking and developments around carbon removal during COP27. The platform will list physical and virtual events focused on carbon removals and live stream events to widen access to a global audience,” noted a statement in a press release from the climate champion organization.

According to COP, matters of carbon removal are getting high attention worldwide.

“The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has repeatedly affirmed that billions of tons of carbon removal are needed to avoid climate disaster and meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. Rather than competing with emissions reduction and climate change adaptation, carbon removal is increasingly seen as a vital and complementary third pillar of climate action.”

It further stated that the issue at hand is shaping politics in most countries all over the world.

“Some countries in the Global South have signaled that developed countries should commit to cleaning up their historic emissions. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)released a call for public input to shape how carbon removal fits into Article VI of the Paris Agreement (focused on voluntary carbon markets). The Un.ited States (US) recently committed billions of dollars in funding to carbon removal, and countries are looking at the role it will play in their nationally determined contributions,” the statement read.

More than 30 carbon removal events will take place during COP27. On November 8, Accelerating the Journey to Net Zero will explore what is required to speed up carbon removal technologies. Then on November 10, The Gift of the Rift will look at Kenya’s carbon removal opportunity.

FutureLabs at COP27 event, Carbon Removals: Pioneers will be proving that carbon removals can happen anywhere while sharing what is needed to scale these activities.

Nigel Topping, The UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP26, will be speaking at the FuturesLab to showcase the Champions’ carbon removals 2030 Breakthrough: an ambitious goal to align around a shared vision of action.

On November 11, Scaling durable Carbon Removals will focus on setting clear and robust standards on what role Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Accounting have. According to the World Bank, MRV refers to the multi-step process to measure the amount of GHG emissions.

GHG emissions assessment quantifies the total greenhouse gases produced directly and indirectly from a business or organization’s activities.

On November 17, Blue Climate Solutions will focus on the ocean’s role in reducing dangerous emissions.
