Zambia launches nationwide free Wi-Fi to bridge digital divide

The Zambian government has officially launched the ZamFree National Public Wi-Fi initiative, a transformative program aimed at expanding digital access across the country.

The initiative was unveiled simultaneously at three major public hubs: Lusaka’s Intercity Bus Terminus, Kapiri-Mposhi Bus Station, and Kitwe’s Chisokone Market.

Hon. Felix Mutati, Minister of Technology and Science, who officiated the Lusaka event, highlighted the significance of the initiative in fostering digital inclusion. “This marks a milestone for Zambia, as we bring free Wi-Fi to critical public spaces like markets, bus stations, schools, and hospitals,” Mutati said. He emphasized that the service will empower local vendors and travelers by providing access to online marketplaces, financial services, and real-time travel information.

The initiative also supports local government modernization efforts. Hon. Gary Nkombo, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, represented by Permanent Secretary Nicholas Phiri, underscored its role in driving innovation in local governance. “This is a key step in implementing our digital strategy to enhance service delivery and efficiency,” Phiri noted.

Ms. Kusobile Kamwambi, Head of the Presidential Delivery Unit, connected the project to President Hakainde Hichilema’s broader vision of transforming Zambia into a competitive middle-income economy by 2030. “Our goal is to achieve 80% internet penetration by 2026, and ZamFree is central to this mission of digital inclusion and economic empowerment,” Kamwambi stated.

The ZamFree initiative will also improve access to over 320 government services through the Zamportal, according to Percy Chinyama, National Coordinator of SMART Zambia. “By making government services available online, we are reducing the need for citizens to visit offices physically, saving time and improving efficiency,” Chinyama said.

Technology partner inq.Digital is providing the infrastructure and bandwidth for the project. Duncan Pie, Regional Managing Director of inq.Digital, expressed pride in collaborating with the government to deliver a 25 Mbps connection at each site.

The ZamFree initiative is a collaborative effort between the Zambian government, the Ministry of Technology and Science, the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, the Presidential Delivery Unit, SMART Zambia, and inq.Digital. It represents a significant step toward closing Zambia’s digital gap and fostering an inclusive digital economy.
