Zambia achieves remarkable progress in global cybersecurity index

Zambia has made impressive strides in the 2023 Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI), scoring 92.6%, a substantial increase from 68.8% in 2020.

The GCI, developed by the International Telecommunication Union, evaluates countries’ commitment to cybersecurity across five key pillars: legal measures, technical measures, organizational measures, capacity building, and cooperation.

“This milestone reflects Zambia’s commitment to enhancing its cyber security landscape and safeguarding its digital infrastructure,” Felix Mutati, science and technology minister, said

He stated that Zambia’s rise in the GCI illustrates the government’s robust commitment to safeguarding the digital economy, critical infrastructure, and citizens from cyber threats.

Mutati highlighted that the improved GCI performance underscores Zambia’s efforts to cultivate a secure digital environment conducive to economic growth and innovation.

“This achievement underscores the government’s vision of a safer, more connected Zambia,” he affirmed.

The Zambian government has implemented comprehensive data protection and cybersecurity legislation, established a National Cybersecurity Strategy, and formed organizations like the Computer.

Incident Response Team. Additionally, Zambia has fortified its international relationships and participates in multilateral agreements to enhance information sharing and cross-border cybersecurity operations.

Furthermore, the country is investing in training and education to raise cybersecurity awareness among the general public, youth, and professionals.
