In a collaborative effort to bolster digital safety across Nigeria, TikTok, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and Data Science Nigeria (DSN) have officially launched Phase 2 of the #SaferTogether campaign. This next phase aims to broaden the reach of digital safety workshops, focusing on cybersecurity, misinformation, and online risks in new regions, including Edo and Kaduna.
The initiative, which first launched in 2022, has already made substantial progress in promoting safe digital practices. During Phase 1, the campaign educated over 500 teachers and more than 1,000 parents in cities such as Abuja, Lagos, and Kano, providing them with practical knowledge of TikTok’s safety features and emphasizing the importance of mental health in digital spaces.
Phase 2 introduces NITDA as a strategic partner, aligning with its mission to enhance digital literacy, improve technology infrastructure, and promote equitable access to digital tools. With this partnership, TikTok, NITDA, and DSN are committed to creating safer digital spaces, fostering cybersecurity, and building digital trust across Nigeria.
“This partnership underscores our commitment to equipping parents, teachers, and guardians with the knowledge to help young people navigate the digital landscape safely,” said Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda, Government Relations and Public Policy Director for Africa at TikTok. “Through local collaborations, we aim to build a resilient and informed online community that prioritizes safety and digital well-being.”
In addition to expanding geographically, Phase 2 of the #SaferTogether campaign will address critical issues such as:
- Misinformation and fake news
- Cyberbullying and sexting
- Digital citizenship and data protection
- Child sexual violence
Workshops will engage a diverse group of stakeholders, including civil society organizations, government representatives, community leaders, and educators, with the goal of fostering a community-centered approach to digital safety.
“Digital literacy is no longer optional—it is essential for creating safe and informed online environments,” said Dr. Olubayo Adekanmbi, Founder and CEO of Data Science Nigeria. “With this campaign, we are equipping parents, teachers, and guardians with the tools to guide young users and build a culture of digital wellness.”
DSN will lead the development of the educational content and curriculum, with input from TikTok’s Trust and Safety team. The goal is to ensure that participants are well-versed in using TikTok’s safety tools and features, fostering a secure and positive digital experience.
“As the digital world becomes an integral part of our lives for learning, socializing, and engagement, we share a collective responsibility to make it safer,” added Dr. Adekanmbi. “We are excited to continue this journey and empower communities with essential digital safety skills.”
By expanding the #SaferTogether initiative, TikTok, NITDA, and DSN aim to create a more secure and trustworthy digital environment across Nigeria, setting a precedent for digital safety in Africa and beyond.
