Spiro expands operations to Nigeria

Spiro, a prominent African electric vehicle (EV) company, has officially commenced operations in Ogun State, Nigeria. This strategic initiative seeks to transform transportation in Africa’s largest economy, addressing both environmental issues and the economic challenges faced by its citizens.

As the demand for sustainable transportation solutions grows, Spiro’s initiative represents a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s automotive industry, promising environmental benefits, economic opportunities, and advancements in technology.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, faces numerous challenges, including pollution, traffic congestion, and a reliance on fossil fuels. In response, there has been a push towards more sustainable and efficient transportation solutions. Electric vehicles (EVs) offer a viable alternative, with the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower operating costs, and decrease dependence on imported fuel.

“Spiro’s electric bikes promise a future of reduced environmental impact, economic savings, and improved community health. We’re proud to collaborate on this sustainable venture, setting a green standard for transportation in Nigeria,” said Gov.  Abiodun.

Spiro’s expansion into Nigeria is part of a broader strategy to tap into the growing African market for electric mobility. The company is rolling out a range of electric vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, and public transportation options like electric buses. By offering a variety of EVs, Spiro aims to cater to different segments of the Nigerian market, from individual consumers to businesses and public transport operators.

The company has announced strategic partnerships with Max, Dot, and Onocon, all of which share Spiro’s vision of a cleaner, healthier world where riders have access to affordable, reliable transportation and cutting-edge technology.

Kaushik Burman, the CEO of Spiro, stated: “Our expansion marks a new chapter for Spiro and the broader EV ecosystem in Nigeria. We’ll deploy a significant number of bikes in our first year in Nigeria, enabling a lifestyle shift towards cleaner, more sustainable transportation options.

“Our goal is to electrify mobility across Africa, and Nigeria, as Africa’s economic powerhouse, represents an important step on that journey.”

Looking ahead, Spiro plans to expand its operations further across Nigeria and into other African markets. The company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability positions it well to lead the charge in transforming the continent’s transportation landscape. With continued investment and supportive policies from the government, the future of electric mobility in Nigeria looks promising.

Governor Abiodun added: “Our administration is committed to mitigating the impact of the subsidy removal and the high cost of diesel fuel while reducing transportation costs for our citizens.

The brand has already made a substantial impact in major African markets, revolutionizing the transportation sector in Togo, Benin, Kenya, Rwanda, Ghana, and Uganda with its eco-friendly electric vehicles (EVs) and innovative battery-swapping technology.

With more than 18,000 electric motorcycles already in use across sub-Saharan Africa, Spiro’s upcoming expansion into Nigeria will extend its presence to up to eight of the country’s major provinces, including Abeokuta, Ibadan, Lagos, and Abuja.

Kaushik Burman, CEO of Spiro, outlined the company’s ambitious plans: “In our first year in Nigeria, we will deploy a substantial number of bikes, promoting a lifestyle shift towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation. Our aim is to electrify mobility across Africa, and Nigeria, as the continent’s economic powerhouse, is a crucial part of this journey.

Spiros’ push for the transition to electric bikes in Africa offers substantial environmental and economic advantages. This shift will reduce fossil fuel dependency, enhance public health, lower transportation costs, and generate local jobs.
