Safaricom Ethiopia expands network to Nekemte

Safaricom Ethiopia has extended its network to Nekemte in the Oromia region, bringing improved connectivity and digital financial services to communities in western Ethiopia.

The expansion includes 32 new towers with a fiber backbone supporting the city and its environs, along with the establishment of five distributor shops. These developments have generated employment opportunities for 250 residents, underscoring Safaricom Ethiopia’s commitment to fostering economic growth in the region.

“Our expansion to Nekemte is a significant milestone as we extend our services to western Ethiopia,” said Wim Vanhelleputte, CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, during the launch event. “After substantial growth in eastern Ethiopia, this step aligns with our mission to connect all corners of the country. With our fast 4G network and M-PESA digital financial services, we aim to empower the people of Nekemte and create new opportunities.”

His Excellency Misganu Tulu, Mayor of Nekemte, welcomed the initiative, highlighting the transformative potential for the community.
“Our city has faced connectivity challenges that have impacted businesses and daily life. Safaricom Ethiopia’s presence will provide reliable telecom services, laying the groundwork for economic growth and new opportunities,” he said.

Beyond connectivity, Safaricom Ethiopia is also investing in education and community development. The company has donated 20 laptops, four Wi-Fi routers, and six months of unlimited internet access to two high schools in Nekemte to promote digital literacy and learning.

This expansion highlights Safaricom Ethiopia’s broader mission to leverage technology to enhance connectivity, education, and economic resilience across the nation. As the company extends its footprint into new regions, it remains committed to driving growth and development throughout Ethiopia.
