Kenya’s Electric Mobility Sub-Sector, part of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), has elected new leaders to spearhead the country’s drive toward a sustainable electric mobility industry. Hans van Toor from Roam has been appointed Chair, while Matt Lloyd from Associated Vehicle Assemblers (AVA) takes on the role of Vice-Chair.
This change in leadership aligns with Kenya’s broader vision of fostering a robust electric mobility sector that focuses on local manufacturing, reducing the country’s dependence on imports, and driving job creation within the clean energy industry.
The initiative underscores the importance of building a sustainable supply chain for electric vehicles (EVs) and related technologies, positioning the country for future industrial and environmental growth.
Under the leadership of van Toor and Lloyd, KAM’s Electric Mobility Sub-Sector will prioritize expanding local manufacturing capabilities. This strategic move is part of Kenya’s larger goal to boost the manufacturing sector’s contribution to its GDP, addressing challenges that have hindered its growth. Strengthening the local supply chain for electric mobility is seen as a key step in positioning Kenya as a regional leader in the industry.
“We are at a pivotal moment for electric mobility in Kenya. The country is already leading in Africa, and with the right policies, investments, and collaboration, we can continue to advance in EV manufacturing,” said Hans van Toor, Chair of the Electric Mobility Sub-Sector.
The Sub-Sector will also work to establish a comprehensive legal framework and guidelines that support the growth of local industries. This includes creating inclusive platforms that ensure all stakeholders in Kenya’s electric mobility sector are involved, fostering transparency and participation across the board.
In line with Kenya’s long-term economic and environmental objectives, the new leadership is committed to enhancing the country’s global competitiveness, reducing transport emissions, and ensuring that the electric mobility sector delivers sustainable economic benefits.
