OPay awards ₦12 million in scholarships to 40 Ahmadu Bello university students

In a significant move to support education and empower Nigeria’s youth, OPay, a leading financial services provider, has granted ₦12 million in scholarships to 40 students at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. Each recipient will receive ₦300,000 to alleviate financial burdens and encourage their academic pursuits.

The scholarship presentation ceremony, held at the university’s Vice-Chancellor’s office, celebrated OPay’s commitment to fostering education and community development.

Speaking at the event, OPay’s Managing Director, Mr. Dauda Gotring, an alumnus of ABU, emphasized the personal significance of the initiative.

“Education transformed my life, and ABU played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today,” Gotring said. “Supporting students who demonstrate promise and determination is our way of giving back to society. At OPay, education is a cornerstone of our community outreach.”

Prof. Kabiru Bala, ABU’s Vice-Chancellor, expressed profound gratitude for OPay’s generosity. “This scholarship will lift a considerable burden from our students, allowing them to focus on their dreams and academic goals,” he said. “OPay’s partnership is a beacon of hope for our university community.”

The initiative at ABU is part of OPay’s larger plan to support 400 students annually across Nigerian universities, including the University of Ibadan and Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

With an annual investment of ₦120 million, the program aims to provide scholarships over the next decade, significantly impacting education in the country and nurturing the next generation of leaders.

In addition to scholarships, OPay is exploring initiatives to empower women in Zaria through entrepreneurship programs, startup support, and skills training, fostering broader economic inclusion and growth.

Founded in 2018, OPay has become a cornerstone of Nigeria’s financial ecosystem, offering a range of services including money transfers, bill payments, and merchant solutions.

The company’s commitment to financial inclusivity and community upliftment is backed by its Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) licensing and NDIC insurance coverage, ensuring trust and reliability.

OPay’s scholarship program and community-focused projects underline its dedication to creating sustainable change, blending education with economic empowerment to strengthen Nigerian communities.
