New ICT hub to spur adoption of digital economy in Zanzibar

Zanzibar has launched a modern information and communications technology centre as the country pushes for adoption of technology.
Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi said the tech hub will be a major catalyst for development.

“The centre opens a new page on ICT development that will enable Zanzibar to write its name in the global science and technology map,” said Mwinyi who presided over the launch of the centre at Bweleo on Unguja Island.

The president is betting on the centre to accelerate economic development and improve the welfare of the people in the Zanzibar archipelago.

The centre has been launched by the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF) in collaboration with mobile network partners.

The country has also launched 42 telephone towers located on Unguja Island and Pemba Island to boost telephone and internet communication.
UCSAF chief executive officer Justina Mashiba said seven ICT centres have been built on Unguja Island and four on Pemba Island.
