Microsoft empowers Kenya with AI skilling initiative

Microsoft has unveiled a transformative AI Skilling Initiative in Kenya, setting ambitious goals to train 1 million people in AI and cybersecurity by 2027. Aiming to support Kenya’s Vision 2030 and Digital Masterplan, the initiative promises to empower individuals, SMEs, and industry leaders with essential AI skills, bridging the digital divide and fostering economic growth.

With a young, tech-savvy population, Kenya offers a unique environment to lead Africa’s AI transformation. The program will enhance AI capabilities across sectors such as government, agriculture, finance, and education, positioning Kenya as a regional AI hub.

Through partnerships with institutions like the Ministry of ICT and KEPSA, Microsoft will launch bootcamps, establish AI Innovation Labs, and support educators in implementing AI curricula from K-12 to university levels.

Winnie Karanu, AI National Skills Initiative Director at Microsoft, emphasizes, “Kenya’s commitment to digital transformation makes it the perfect location for this initiative, enabling us to support diverse sectors with critical skills needed to thrive in today’s digital economy.”

As Kenya advances toward an AI-powered future, Microsoft’s collaboration with local stakeholders highlights its commitment to building sustainable digital talent and transforming Kenya into a global leader in AI.
