According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), there are 14 licensed online taxi companies permitted to operate in Kenya.
These include Yego Mobility Limited, Little Ltd, Uber BV, Bolt Operations, Farasi Cabs Kenya, Hava Net Ltd, An Nisa Taxi Ltd, H Cab Ltd, PTG Ltd, TMNK Enterprises Ltd, Amicabre Travel Services, Maramoja Transport Ltd, Move on Telecons Limited and J-RIDE Ltd.
NTSA clarified that these companies have been approved in compliance with the National Transport and Safety Authority (Transport Network Companies, Owners, Drivers and Passengers) Regulations of 2022.
If Kenyans oppose the licensing of any of these companies, they may file an appeal with the Transport Licensing Appeals Board Tribunal (TLAB) for consideration.
The TLAB was created under Sections 38 and 30 of the National Transport and Safety Authority Act No33 of 2012 to hear and determine appeals from the licensing decisions of the NTSA.
To file a complaint, individuals can visit the registry in person or file the matter electronically through the Judiciary E-Filing portal.
During the appeal process, supporting documents must be provided to support the case.
The Transport Network Companies, Owners, Drivers and Passengers Regulations of 2022, which were gazetted in June 2022, give the safety authority the responsibility of licensing all taxi-hailing companies in the sector and regulating the industry.
The licenses are renewed annually according to the regulations. Online taxi-hailing companies are significant transport players in Kenyan cities such as Nairobi, Mombasa, and Nakuru.
