ChatGPT now accessible via WhatsApp and phone calls

OpenAI has expanded the reach of its widely popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, by launching it on WhatsApp, the world’s largest messaging platform with over 2.7 billion users. This new integration allows users globally to interact with ChatGPT through text, while users in the U.S. can also engage in voice conversations via a toll-free number: 1-800-ChatGPT.

The initiative aims to make artificial intelligence more accessible, enticing a broader audience to explore ChatGPT’s capabilities. “We’re focused on reducing barriers so more people can experience what AI can do,” said Antonia Woodford, a product manager at OpenAI. “We’re thrilled to bring ChatGPT to familiar platforms like WhatsApp and phone calls.”

WhatsApp users can begin chatting with ChatGPT by adding the number +1 1800 242 8478 to their contacts. U.S.-based users can also call the number for voice interactions, with 15 minutes of free talk time provided each month for calls made from a U.S. number.

The chatbot on WhatsApp supports text-based conversations without requiring users to log into an OpenAI account. However, it has a knowledge cutoff of September 2021 and cannot be added to group chats. OpenAI has also emphasized that misuse of the feature in violation of its terms of service could lead to account restrictions.

“This is an experimental way to engage with ChatGPT, and availability or limits may evolve over time,” an OpenAI spokesperson stated. For advanced features like more tools, higher usage limits, and customization, OpenAI recommends using ChatGPT through its official platform.

This rollout positions ChatGPT as a direct competitor to Meta’s AI assistant, which is gradually being integrated into WhatsApp and other Meta-owned platforms. With this launch, OpenAI continues to solidify its role as a leader in making artificial intelligence a part of everyday digital interactions.
