Cameroonian agri-tech innovates with insects for sustainable consumer products

Green Feed Solutions, a Cameroon-based agri-tech start-up co-founded by Boaz Pangui, is revolutionizing sustainable consumer products by leveraging insects as a cornerstone of the food chain. The company focuses on producing 100% natural products that prioritize environmental sustainability and consumer health.

The start-up offers a range of products, including organic fertilizers and protein-rich animal feed derived from Black Soldier Fly (BSF) proteins, suitable for chicken, pork, and fish farming

“Our method centers on breeding the Black Soldier Fly, an insect renowned for its capability to bio-convert household and agro-industrial organic waste,” explained Pangui.

The company also produces honey from the eucalyptus reserves in Bafou, West Cameroon, supported by bees vital for pollination and biodiversity preservation.

Green Feed Solutions collaborates with notable global organizations, including the European Union, the World Bank, GIZ’s Meet Africa 2 program, and TotalEnergies through its Startup Challenge initiative. These partnerships have enabled the company to scale operations and aim for significant economic contributions by reducing imports and minimizing foreign currency outflows.

Pangui revealed plans to secure a 2-hectare site in collaboration with a real estate firm, facilitating expansion to meet soaring demand. “With demand far exceeding supply, we are actively pursuing external funding to scale up production. Our ultimate goal is to establish operations in all major agricultural and livestock production areas across the country, ensuring shorter supply chains and greater consumer accessibility,” he stated.

To make its products more affordable and accessible, the company has built a complete value chain that spans raw material production to finished goods such as chickens, pork, fish, and honey.

Green Feed Solutions has gained recognition for its innovative solutions. Pangui was the 2024 winner in the “Cycle Up” category of the TotalEnergies Start-up program. “This achievement demonstrates that young Cameroonians are creating solutions that serve their communities,” he said.

Last month, the company presented its business model to investors at the AfricArena Grand Summit 2024 in South Africa. Pangui emphasized the importance of initiatives like TotalEnergies Start-up and Meet Africa 2 in providing financial support, training, and networks to empower start-ups.

“Scaling these programs will ensure more start-ups become success stories,” he added.

Green Feed Solutions is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable agri-tech, driving innovation and economic development in Cameroon and beyond.
